The Problem

The magazine's debut issue needed a layout language that could hold long-form essays and full-bleed photography with equal weight, on a modest self-publishing budget.

The Process

I paired a quiet serif display face with a single red accent used only for pull quotes and folios, letting black-and-white photography carry most of the visual weight. A flexible grid allowed each feature to breathe differently while staying recognizably part of the same issue.

The Outcome

Issue 01 sold out its print run through independent bookshops, and the layout system became the template for the magazine's ongoing quarterly release.
